Chronicles
Session 13:
Brinden magically returned back to us. But this time Artemis went missing.
As they come out into this dark misty cemetery, they hear sounds coming from directly in front of them. They are hidden behind a giant tower structure in front of them that spans about 30 feet into the air. There is a fence in front of them separating them from the cemetery. The fence is about chest high, made of metal, and has sharp points at the top of each rod. Brinden makes his way to the south corner, with Illi and William flanking either side of him. Silas peeks around the east corner.
They see in front of them a large graveyard. Silas sees the main gates on his side. They are unlocked and slightly ajar. They all see an assembled party inside. There appear to be two human guards in light chain armor carrying spears and looking straight ahead at an entourage. Behind them appear to be three young human girls around 13 to 17 years of age shackled/manacled together with chain. The guard on the left has hold of the end of the chain and is tugging at it. The girls don't appear to be trying to escape, but they do look distraught, their heads are bent, they have tears down their face, and they look sullen.
The entourage in front of the guards appear to be human, or what used to be human. They are desperately purely put together shambles of flesh and bone. They are lurching slowly and moaning, drooling and various disturbing fluids oozing out of many open decaying wounds with flesh just sloughing off in pieces. There are five of them (green, red, blue, purple, pink). There is another figure that looks better put together. ((Picture)) He appears to be wearing breastplate and armor and is carrying a large sword. He appears to be pointing at the guards and then pointing at the girls. The guards are regarding that and nodding at him and speaking a language none of them understand ((Italian??)). They look apprehensive and as if trying to keep the situation cool.
Brinden is cautiously regarding what's going on. He's a little dazed and mystified by all this. He has no idea where he is, though he sees the rest of his party with him, and hope that they have some sort of clue what is happening. Illi is being cautious and staying behind Brinden. William view is being blocked by those two, but he can hear those strange voices and really wishes he had Artemis's tail right now. Instead, he latches onto Brinden's furs. Brinden pats William on the head and motions for them to keep quiet.
Brinden: Shh. Keep it down, nothing's happening yet but we got to be careful here. Just shh. Stay calm. Take a deep breath.
Silas pushes his hand against the fence half expecting it to pass through somehow. But it is cool and solid, resisting his push. He's pretty sure though he doesn't know where he is, he is there. There's no cover, no trees, but plenty of graves and gravestones. In front of the girls and in between the guards is a large fountain. In the far northern corners of the cemetery are two more buildings with doors in.
Brinden doesn't recognize the fountain, but in the distance, about 300-400 feet, the dirt paths on the west side of the cemetery appear to collect and go towards a central structure, a mausoleum. He recognizes it.
It appears to be the middle of the night, the sky is dark with barely any stars, there's the white wash of a moon across the cobalt and blue hewn air around them. There are very few light sources. The guards seem to be the only ones who have these shimmering emblems on them that may have a light spell on them to give them some sort of lantern. Past the mausoleum is smoke and mists that settle into a valley with a keep, another familiar sight to Brinden. He is a bit creeped out, this all seems familiar for some reason, he can't put his finger on it.
The zombies are all around five to six feet tall, and are slowly listing in place rocking back and forth, eyes cast up focusing at some unknown vision. The leader points a sword at the guard on the left and lets out a loud moan, at which point purple zombie starts shuffling forward towards the very unsettled guard, who is holding out the chain binding the girls with a very shaky hand.
Brinden can't help but feel a sense of damsels in distress somewhat. He doesn't know what potentially they're sticking their fingers into. He's feeling cautious, as there's no reason to attack apart from three girls looking a little nervous. He feels the need to huddle up. He moves around the corner towards Silas, with William still attached. Illi follows along, prepping an arrow.
Silas is poised on the corner, braced against the fence, eyes laser focused on the array of figures in front of him. All of a sudden he hears these voices: "I dunno, let's get Silas! Let's get him! C'mon, c'mon!" And loud clomping, slamming, banging footsteps. "THERE HE IS! SILAS!!" Silas whirls around to shush them, taking out his shield.
As the rest of the group comes around, Silas sees the lowered blade of the zombie leader raise up and point in the general vicinity of the tower they are hiding behind, and the zombie leader lets out another loud moan. The guard on the left, who is somewhat dismayed at the zombie lurching towards him, also turns and says something in the unknown language. The pink zombie starts to shamble forward towards the tower.
Brinden pokes his head around the corner to see if anyone heard them. As he angles around Silas, he can see the guards regarding, however he's not in eyesight of the zombie leader, but he does notice one of the zombies had moved from his position. He feels as if he's seen this in a dream, but not exactly like this. Somehow these beings that are there, the count is the same, there are five beings that he thinks he's seen before. He can't quite place it, but a name springs to his mind.
Brinden: I don't know why we're here... I do not know why we're in a graveyard... and this is all very dreamlike for me right now okay? I just opened my eyes from a dream and it's kinda right there in front of me, but it's not quite the same, but... I feel like we're in trouble? Maybe?
Silas: ...that's the first sensible thing you've said.
Brinden: I'm gonna just try something. And see what happens, alright? We could just stand here and watch what goes down, but I'm gonna just... I think if we're gonna end up in a fight, then let me just see what reaction I get to something here, and... we'll see what happens. If that's okay? As opposed to just standing here and maybe getting killed.
Silas: Go for it.
Brinden steps around Silas and tries to make heads and tails out of what's what. He walks forward a moment, feeling as if time is of the essence. As the pressure is building, he heads towards the open gates.
Brinden: [bellowing out as deep and loud as possible] RANNOK!
He walks down very confidently, not sure if the name Rannok means anything to these people. He's shouting the name fairly ambiguously, but with some clout. All at once, as he crests the corner, the zombie leader and the two guards turn and notices him. The zombie lackeys and the girls don't seem to regard him at all.
Brinden: [even louder] RANNOK!!
The human guards cock their heads as if they're confused. The shackled girls all cower and quake and shiver. The zombie leader just raises his sword towards Brinden and moans again.
Illi runs up to the fence and takes a shot at the zombie leader. He doesn't even flinch. He watches as the arrow sails over his left shoulder. If he didn't know they were there before, he does now. She runs up to join Brinden at the gate.
William saw Illi run up and start shooting, and moves forward next to Silas.
William: Are... are we fighting?!
Silas: ...yeah. Well, we are now. And you can help.
William takes out his bow and aims at the purple zombie. The zombie doesn't move or flinch or anything at all as the arrow sinks into dead flesh. William quickly ducks back behind Silas.
The pink zombie continues to shuffle forward towards the gate. The blue, red, and green zombies move towards the guard on the right. The zombie leader also moves forward, towards the guard on the left. The purple zombie falls forward onto the guard in front of him, who is still holding the chain shackling the girls. The guard reflexively throws up a shield and bats away at the mitts of the creature as it tries to latch on and arches a neck with open jaws towards him. Blue and red zombies are falling upon the guard on the right. Both guards are screaming at this point. The blue zombie sinks his teeth into the guard and grabs on, grappling him, restraining him as he chomps down. The guards are terrified, they weren't really expecting this. They were already confused as to who these newcomers were, and now they are literally being torn apart. The red zombie also sinks his jaws into the guard, who erupts into blood and looks to be on death's door. The zombie leader sheaths his sword and produces a longbow, releasing an arrow at Illi. He can see her and he doesn't like her. His arrow sails over her, and she smirks at him. He is not amused.
Brinden walks forward, still perplexed and draws his sword.
Brinden: RANNOK FORBIDS THIS, CEASE THIS IMMEDIATELY!
The zombie leader once again regards him as he says the name, and with his emaciated dead flesh, it's hard to tell what he's reading, but he does hear Brinden and is looking straight at him. Brinden readies an attack.
Silas gets out a javelin and takes a step forward. He aims for the zombie leader. It find purchase underneath his breastplate and does damage. Silas sees it sink in, and the zombie leader is compelled to move from the force of it, but there doesn't seem to be any pain registering on his face. And he reaches in and just pulled it out and throws it on the ground. He looks angry. Silas steps in through the gate in front of Illi.
The right guard tries frantically tries to push the zombies off of him, but they are just too much dead weight. He's flailing, his knees are buckling, the blood is still gushing out of his shoulder. The left guard is frantically holding out the chain and yells something pleadingly. The zombie in front of him doesn't seem to notice, and the zombie leader is wholly focused on the party.
Illi runs up to the girls and tries to talk to them.
Illi: Do you mind if I walk through here?
The girl in front of her whose head was bowed, kinda looks up quizzically and cocks her head. She speaks in the unknown language. Illi tries to make a walking gesture with her hands. The girl is confused, but doesn't seem like she's going to block her, but she is still chained in place. Illi nimbly springs between the chains connecting the girls and roll to her feet. She attacks the blue zombie with her sword, which sinks in and lobs off a chunk of flesh. The creature doesn't seem to even notice, but the hit compelled him to release his grasp on the guard. She attacks again, and hacks another piece of flesh off. She is close enough to see that those who have eyes are white and glazed over, while others are empty sockets.
William is torn between running after everyone in staying safely hidden behind the tower. He decides to stay and shoots another arrow at the purple zombie. It sinks in a couple inches from his first shot, but he's still standing. It's hard to tell if they're bloodied because they're so naturally covered in gore and ooze, but there appears to be kind of viscous fluids flowing out of him at this point.
The zombie leader is not too happy to see the advance of the young elven girl. He moves up, and as he moves, he throws down his bow and draws out a curved barbed sword. He squares off again Illi and she sees his dead eyes meet hers. He swings into her with his sword. She feels the sword cut into her. She feels the blade, and then all of a sudden, this other pulling awful force digging into her. As it does, she is compelled to shake it off, as she could feel it draining her consciousness, draining her will. But she does shake it off.
Illi: [shaking her head at him] Nice try.
He immediately swings again. She feels the same kind of compulsion overcome her, except she isn't able to shake off the effect. As this energy seeps her will and seeps her strength, she feels her limbs becoming numb and she's barely able to lift or move them. She is stunned. He appears to be done with her. The red, blue, and green zombies move onto the guard on the right, and the guard is torn apart as he's dragged to the ground kicking and screaming. They hear crunch of bones and sinew, snapping and tearing of legs. The blue zombie pops the guard's neck back as he tears a humongous piece of flesh from his neck that spills forth this red crimson gore. It seems the guard is done for. The purple zombie tries to swipe at the left guard, but fails. The guard is still trying to compel the chain into the zombie's grasp, still screaming in the unknown language. The pink zombie shambles towards Brinden and is trying to grasp onto him, but does a very bad job. He really sidesteps. Illi is currently more blood than person, she's starting to look like the guy next to her.
Silas: [yelling to Brinden] Can you get those girls out of the way?
Brinden: With pleasure! I can see what I can do.
Brinden had an attack ready and takes a swing at the pink zombie.
Brinden: RANNOK!!
It's a heavy cut as Brinden tries to disembowel the guy. His intestines spill out. Brinden is still a bit perplexed and dazed from his dreams from being in the black box.
Brinden: BY THE FURY OF RANNOK!!
And Brinden begins to rage. He swings at the pink zombie again. He cuts its stomach out even more, and the entrails start pouring out from the gaping wound. The zombie does not seem to be affected by it. Brinden steps forward towards the girls, putting his back to them.
Brinden: RUN! RANNOK SAYS RUN!!
The girls look terrified and doubles over, quivering in fear.
Illi: Common... No... Augh...
Silas runs up and moves a dazed Illi to the side, and as he does so, he can see two huge open wounds just gushing on her torso. He has his shield out, and gets out his ax and makes an attack at the zombie leader with divine smite. As the blade cuts into him, he started just letting it happen, like it didn't even faze him, until the blade erupted into this furor, at which point he kinda reviled away from it. The corpses around him kind of shield themselves a little bit.
The right guard is twitching a little bit. He doesn't quite get up, but he is convulsing. And this filth is vomiting out from his bile and he's just retching. The left guard is going to throw the chain he's holding at the zombie, which just bounces off of him. He turns and looks at the party, then looks at the zombie, and tries to thrust his spear into the zombie. Unfortunately, he desperately pokes forward and goes clean through the tunic the creature was wearing without gathering any flesh and just tears away fabric. He's terrified and tries to run. The zombie tries to grab him but doesn't do so. The guard books it around the girls, backpedaling and holding his spear out until his back slams against the building. The girls don't move at all, they're terrified and shaking. They appear to be in common gear. The ones on the outside seem to be similarly dressed. The one on the inside has more olive skin and her hair is more braided and the clothes she's wearing is a lot more colorful. They do not appear to have been whored up.
Illi is pretty staggered. She turns her head towards Silas and blinks at him.
Illi: H... Hel...
She still remains stunned. She tries desperately to shake it off, but the pull on her essence is too great.
William meanwhile runs towards the gate and stares at the right guard getting ripped apart, all the blood flowing everywhere. After a moment, he snaps out of it and turns his attention back to the purple zombie. He fires another arrow and as it sinks through the zombie's left shoulder, it rips the arm off, leaving it dangling by a tendon and flapping at his side.
The zombie leader is squared off against Silas. He doesn’t break eyesight, but holds a hand towards Illi. His mouth opens and as he growls, a glowing presence starts building up inside of it. He is attempting an attack against Illi. A purple glow erupts in his hand, the same color as in his mouth. A bolt arcs out from it and strikes her. As it hits her and she falls down, the bolt grabs onto her and pulls energy from her, and the beast eschews it into his mouth. As he does so, his wounds starts stitching shut. He then swings his sword at Silas, who easily bats it aside with his shield defiantly, not even breaking eyesight with the thing. The red, blue and green zombies are just feasting on the fallen guard, they are just having a grand old time. The purple zombie is going to attempt to move through the girls to get to Brinden. The girl steps aside and lets him pass. The purple zombie attempts to strike Brinden, bludgeoning him. As he slams into Brinden with his fist, his other arm wraps around him and grapples onto him. The pink zombie slams and grapples Brinden as well. It’s a lovefest.
Brinden makes an attack on the pink zombie with his longsword, and it loses its grip as Brinden shaves its arm clean off. It starts gushing blood, amongst other fluids.
Brinden: [towards the girls] ...RANNOK!!!
Every time he says that word, even if he’s delightfully winking at them, they’re terrified and cowering.
Silas attacks the zombie leader again with his ax, but he sidesteps that blow as the ax cleaves itself into the ground. Silas steps through the fountain over Illi, getting across the zombie leader to the other side. Illi’s head isn’t submerged, she’s collapsed half leaning over with her face towards the ground on the outside of the fountain.
The right guard is still twitching, although the twitching is escalated. The left guard starts to run towards the gates in front of William.
Illi succeeds in her first death save, and is twitching on the side of the fountain.
The guard coming at William startles him, and William quickly sidesteps him. He sees the zombies all over Brinden and lets loose an eldritch blast at them. The purple zombie explodes, and there’s a mess of body parts and fluid everywhere. It’s like he popped a giant zombie zit in front of Brinden, and the thing just pops and erupts in a fountain as limbs start bouncing all around.
The zombie leader doesn’t like Silas and squares up against him again. But he points his sword at the boy who just blew up one of his zombies and lets out a growl, at which point the red, blue and green zombies stops feasting on the fallen guard and starts shambling towards William, who squeaks in fear. The zombie leader then swings his sword at Silas, who bats that aside expertly. He then spins nimbly in place and tries to swipe with a backswing, which also miss. The pink zombie tries to strike at Brinden, but fails.
Brinden is stunned but even more enraged with all this mess on his face and body. He steadies himself, wanting it over and done with, and screams in the pink zombie’s face as he brings his sword down, attacking recklessly. The sword comes down on the zombie’s head, which shatters it like a melon. His torso splits a bit as he staggers forward and Brinden kicks the corpse aside. Brinden lets out a low bellowing growl, having given up on Rannok. He looks around taking everything in, aware of the zombies going after William, the three girls still there next to him, Illi’s down. He runs past the girls and to Illi’s side, the green zombie not even regarding him as its attention is focused on William.
Silas is squaring off toe to toe with this fearsome warrior in front of him.
Silas: [yelling at William] Don’t go outside the gates! If you’re gonna run, run around the inside with us! Keep them inside the gates, don’t let them outside the gates! Run away as much as you want to, but stay inside the gates!
William: [wincing] Okay!!
Silas strikes at the zombie leader again, the blow streaks down and nearly compels the zombie’s shoulder down as a big part of his armor chunks off and his flesh tears open. Black ichor flows out instead of blood. The zombie leader just composes himself and scowls at Silas.
The right guard is still twitching. The left guard tries to run by William, who makes a mad grab for the guy’s cape and yanks with all his might. The guard didn’t expect that and gets pulled prone to the ground, staring up at William. He regards William and says something quickly in the unknown language.
William: [still clinging on to the cape frantically] I don’t know! I don’t know!!
Illi makes another successful save.
William resists his instinct to just go running out the gate, instead he climbs over the prone guard’s body, scrambling back towards the cover of the tower.
William: Eat the guard! Eat the guard!!
William takes out his bow and fires at the green zombie, striking it with an arrow. The green, red and blue zombies resume chasing William. However, as they pass the girls, the girls try to trip them. One succeeds in throwing out her chain and catching the green zombie’s foot, dragging him to the ground and making him fall flat on his face. The red zombie bashes at William and grapples him.
Brinden: It’s not that bad, don’t worry, don’t worry. It’s actually… kinda warming. Makes you feel secure.
The zombie leader does not like Silas. He sees a challenge and he wants a taste. He swings his sword in Silas’s direction. As the sword cuts into Silas, he shakes off the effects of the damage as it seeps at his essence. The zombie leader seems frustrated at Silas’s strength and resilience and tries to cut him again. Silas bats the second hit aside. The zombie leader is angry and not happy with Silas.
Dr. Brinden, MD turns to Illi and against all odds, stabilizes her by tearing off pieces of his furs and stuffing them into her gaping wounds. He then looks around, seeing Silas has got this under control.
Silas: Go after William.
Brinden makes his way around to the fallen green zombie.
Silas hits the zombie leader again. They don’t like each other.
The right guard is still on the ground. The left guard fucking books and is out of there. They could see him running down the road.
Illi is stabilized.
William is still being grappled by the red zombie. He’s flailing in panic and screaming, and as he struggles against the red zombie, he shoots a wave of fire from his hands that washes over and burns both the red zombie and the blue zombie behind it. It breaks the grapple by the red zombie, and he scrambles away. The red zombie makes a grab after him, but misses.
The red, blue and green zombies continue chasing after William. The red zombie tries to grab again, but a lot of his muscle is burned and he falls flat on his face. The zombie leader tries to swing at Silas again. Neither swing hits. He looks at the zombies going after the boy and scowls. He lets out a loud roar. He shifts through the fountain again and puts a foot on Illi’s back.
Brinden watches the army of walking corpses wading past him, completely ignoring him as they go after the boy, who’s running frantically. He’s a little bewildered. As much as he wants to turn to Illi and swipe the zombie leader’s foot off of her, he instead brings his sword high in a sweeping arc down on the red zombie. He lobs an arm off and slides up a step to stand between the red zombie and the girls.
Silas moves in front of the zombie leader again and attacks with his ax and casts Thunderous Smite. There is a crackle and what sounds like a clap of thunder in the middle of a hurricane. It’s so loud, even Illi hears it. The zombie leader erupts in black ichor as he’s thrown back and knocked prone into the fountain with a thunderous smash. Silas steps forward up to him.
The right guard is still twitching.
Illi is still down.
William runs away and the red zombie takes a swipe at him and misses. William quickly turns back and fires off another eldritch blast. Like the purple zombie, the force of the blast just compels the red zombie to pop and rain down gore upon Brinden, who just looks at his sword in confusion, wondering if he had a magic sword that did that.
The blue and green zombies, instead of chasing William, goes and tries to grab on to Silas, who just bats them aside. The zombie leader erupts in anger as he stands up and growls, screaming and starts wildly chomping at Silas. He’s swinging wildly at Silas and missing, stumbling backwards. Silas makes an opportunity attack but misses, streaking across the water and splashing the zombie leader. He’s recoiling from Silas.
The conga line keeps passing Brinden, who takes a swing at the green zombie. He sweeps across and cleave off the zombie’s right leg clean at the thighs. The zombie topples forward and falls prone in front of Brinden. Brinden circles around the zombies and backs up with Silas. The blue zombie swipes at Brinden and tries to grab on, but Brinden bashes his arms aside and keeps moving.
Silas steps forward and hits the zombie leader again.
Now that William is away from the scary zombie people, he calms down and pulls back out his bow and aims for the blue zombie. The arrow flies clean through the zombie’s head, which pops and he falls forward onto Brinden, the neck wound just erupting with gore right in Brinden’s face, whose mouth is still open from raging.
The zombie leader slides to the side and swipes at Silas with his blade, this time the blade sinks in, but Silas was able to shake off the necrotic damage. The zombie leader is frustrated to see Silas’s will overpowering his and he strikes again. The blade sinks in again, but again he’s able to shake off the necrotic damage.
The green zombie crawls around Brinden and grabs at Silas’s ankle, chomping down on it and finally bringing Silas down. The creature in front of Silas freezes and then his mouth upturns and shows his pointy teeth as he cackles menacingly.
Brinden steps around the thrashing green zombie up to the zombie leader and puts himself between him and Silas. Brinden has his sword and good will.
Brinden: RANNOK! DESTROY YOU!!
He swings and it clanks against the zombie leader’s breastplate and scrapes across it.
Silas misses a saving throw.
With the enemies focused on Brinden, William runs up to Illi and rifles through her body, looking for the weird tasting berries. It took him a lot of time, but he found 6 of them.
The green zombie tries to grab at Brinden’s ankle. The zombie leader tries to strike at Brinden, but his first hit misses. He swings again and hits, but Brinden is raging and frothing and easily shakes it off.
Brinden stays next to William, frothing at the mouth and spitting blood and giblets out, and swings down his sword. The sword rakes against the zombie leader and bashes him across the throat. And eruption of black ichor and his head almost separates before collapsing down, and he wavers and staggers, he’s being held together by wishes and dreams right now. Black goo is gushing down his breastplate and flowing forth. His cold dead eyes are locked on Brinden and glazed over, staring at him, grasping barely at his blade and doing everything he can to hold onto it.
Silas made a successful death save.
William takes one berry and tries to pry Silas’s mouth open. As he does, a voice in his head says to him, “You fool! Boy, each of those is only one essence of healing! If you’re going to give them, give them all, for god’s sakes!” William pauses.
William: All of them…?
He quickly pries open Silas’s mouth and shoves all the berries in as far down Silas’s throat as possible and chomps Silas’s jaws, desperately trying to make him chew. He then starts patting Silas’s cheeks.
William: Wake up!
Silas is immediately stabilizes and snaps awake with six hit points and a little boy smacking his face and throat. There’s a terribly sour taste in his mouth, and then sweet. The sweetness is this juice just rushing down his throat. William is violently shaking him.
Silas: Blech...
William: Wake up! Wake up!!
Silas: I’m awake! I’m awake! I’m awake! What the hell?!
William: [pointing at the zombie leader] Kill it! Kill it! Kill it!!
The green zombie still tries to grab at Brinden’s ankle and graples. The zombie leader sees Silas in his revived state and wants to attack, but then sees the zombie grabbing onto Brinden and grappling him, as well as Brinden screaming and frothing and yelling and raging, his attention turns on Brinden. He hits Brinden and Brinden becomes stunned as necrotic damage tears through him. Seeing Brinden in that state, the zombie leader would normally try to devour his soul and regain hit points and heal himself, but he really hates Silas. So he sees his opportunity and slides over, trying to bury his blade into the prone Silas. Silas swats it aside with his shield. The zombie leader looks at him in amazement and then that fear starts washing over his face again.
Brinden breaks free from being stunned, and in his frenzied rage, breaks the grasp of the green zombie.
Silas stands up and puts his shield away, two-handing his weapon. He starts tearing the zombie leader to fucking pieces. His head comes off, his arms come off. Each one of his mighty swings lobs another chunk from this guy. As he’s falling to pieces in front of Silas, black goo is spraying everywhere. Silas is triumphant!
William stares at the terrifying Silas as he goes buck wild on this guy. There’s one last zombie to take care of, so William sweeps energy down and blasts him, and the arc of the blast pops him into this wave of goo that washes over Brinden.
At the end of the fight, there’s still a guard that’s twitching and three girls that are cowering in front of them. They’re not attempting to run or flee. The chain is at the foot of Illi, who is stabilized. Brinden goes over to check on Illi. The furs are still in place and holding back the bleeding. Silas thinks about chopping the guard’s head off, but decides to use lay on hands to heal him instead. Silas takes off his necklace and rests the figure of a glass dolphin against the guard’s forehead and concentrates on bringing him back. The guard starts convulsing and wretched filth starts pouring from his every orifice. He coughs it up and comes to, eyes wide. He’s still hurt, but he’s awake and appears to be normal. The divine healing purges the guard of the filth that’s in him.
