Session 20:

Initiative order: Illi, William, Artemis, Silas, Brinden, wolf

As a surprise round, the wolf presented to them unawares.  It doesn’t do any charging, but Illi and Artemis sees the massive beast plant its forefeet on the ground and starts to writhe and shake.  His right leg starts to buckle a little and they see this thing drop.  He deposits something that Artemis recognizes as another one of those green undulating orbs on the ground.

It didn’t come out of his mouth, he’s got these large growths all over him, and as he buckled and shake, it kinda sloughed off.

Illi produces the medallion that she has and dispels the memory.  Brinden’s at the top of the ladder and Silas is below him.  William is at the base of the ladder.  Artemis, Brinden and Silas has an image flash into their heads.

They see a little girl that looks like Illi curled up and she’s using a wolf as a pillow.  It’s a pure white wolf and around her are a bunch of little wolves sleeping.  It’s nighttime and the wolf gets up and bites her on the ear and runs away, and Illi chases the wolf and they look like they’re playing.  She catches up to the wolf and bites it on the ear and they follow her.  There’s a sense of family and playfulness from the dream.

The party experiences this as if they were there, and they feel the joy and playfulness, the camaraderie between the two and the familial bond.  Almost like… for Silas it’d be like looking into the eyes of Themis as she runs up to him after a long time of being away.  It’s that kind of very, very familiar family connection which might seem a little odd.  Artemis in particular recognize the wolf, not like its name or social security number, but she recognizes it as a particular breed.  Packs of these wolves run throughout the south woods around Loudwater.  She recognizes this because it’s around the area where she previously camped out and made home.  She’s familiar with these beasts, they are genuinely looked after in regards of protectors by farmers and stuff from surrounding villages because they’ve been known to hunt goblins.  So normally farmers see it as a good omen when they see packs of wolves prowling out, because it means they aren’t going to get ambushed.  It’s interesting, she doesn’t remember any elves rolling with these wolves, but it’s interesting.

It’s hard to tell a lot because the body language of this thing is still kinda sloughing off, but she sees based upon the reaction of the beast, after it deposited this icky thing on the ground, it did seem to shudder a bit under the compulsion of the wave and she sees its eyes raise to her.  It’s tough for her to see anything else.  Illi kneels down.

William is at the bottom of the ladder looking up, and he sees Silas’s tail lashing around.  Brinden is above Silas on the rungs.  He heard a shout from above in Illi’s voice.  He can’t really do anything at the moment, so he just stays at the bottom of the stairs, keeping an eye out to see what Brinden and Silas does.

After the first green glob burst, Artemis recognizes it as it appears to be, though she’s never seen anything like it before, a plant-like pod.  She surmises that this organic plant life bursted as a kind of defense mechanism.  Maybe she’s seen smaller flowers or such in the wild that behave similarly.  What she knows about this, because she suffered the effects of this mist as well, is how it works is when these things burst, they leave this kind of aura of mist that lasts around a game round before the mist dissipates and while in the mist, she feels this poison reacts to moisture, so anything she does to exert herself would probably cause sweat, which is what causes damage.  ((When she’s inside of the mist, every time she takes an action or movement, she will get hurt by acid)).  She knows this, no one else does right now, and she saw the wolf slough off another one a moment ago.  She imagine that the range is about five feet to cause the bursting reaction.  The mist from the first one finalized and dissipated.

Now that the area seems to be clear, Artemis is going to stealthily clear out the rest of the vines from the statue area.  She’s caught up in the desperation of the situation and realizes subtlety has gone out the fucking door.  Her scimitar has been unsheathed.  ((The statue falls apart and Artemis gets impaled by Rannok’s sword hon hon hon)).  She had previously cleared away about a quarter of the statue, as she slices across with her scimitar, she causes about a half more of the vines to fall off so there’s about a quarter left.  So she made a majority of the way through and can kinda see this etched in strange language that goes across the base.  It’s pretty large and pronounced.  Obviously, she can’t read it, but probably another good hit would clear off the rest of it.  She stays where she is.

Silas is behind the barbarian on the latter.  He experienced the memory, he heard a growling and a shimmy shake and a strange icky slimy splat on the ground.

Silas:  What’s going on up there?

Brinden is able to poke his head out and see a little bit.  He sees the large wolf thing, and describes it down to Silas.

Brinden:  It’s not looking pretty.

Silas:  Does it look like Artemis has any of the thing cleared so we can see it?

Brinden:  Kinda just over halfway, maybe?  I’d say it’s hacked away, a little bit.

Silas:  Can we distract the wolf?  And have her get the rest of it off?  (looks at William)  William, if we get you up there, can you read that and then jump back down here?

William quickly shakes his head, looking terrified.

Silas:  We’ll keep the wolf away from you.  We’ll keep you safe.

William:  Promise?

Silas:  Promise.

William:  ...okay.

Silas isn’t able to go anywhere at the moment, but he tries to climb the barbarian.  Silas starts climbing up Brinden’s frame, making his way up the elven ladder.  Brinden was not expecting this to happen, and as the weight… and Silas is a fit person but he’s got a lot of armor… as he’s climbing up on Brinden, he’s reaching for the rung just beyond and slips a little bit.  Brinden feels Silas awkwardly grabbing on to his clavicle and pulling his arm off the rung.  Brinden grabs on to the rung with his other free arm.  Silas jerks against the barbarian’s frame ((hnnnnngh)).  With his free arm, Brinden grabs onto a rung and pushes Silas up past him with the rest of his strength.  Silas climbs out and positions himself and takes out his shield and javelin.  He lets Artemis and Illi know what the plan is.

Silas:  Clear off as much of the stone as you can and William’s gonna come up, run over, read it, and run back down.  And then we’re all gonna try to get out of here.  We’re gonna distract the wolf as long as we can and keep William safe.

Illi:  Maybe I can use food to distract it like Brinden did.

Silas:  Then do that.  I’m not sure it’ll work but we can try it.

Brinden takes a deep breath, things almost got real.  He finishes climbing up.  He’s dashing straight up to Silas, pretty enthusiastic even with a somewhat slit throat.  He’s still feeling somewhat pumped if but a little hesitant.  With this whole fiasco of climbing, he’s gonna get up there off the ladder and as he sees the wolf, he instinctively draws the wight’s sword.  He pulls it out and not quite seeing Silas yet as he hoisted himself out, but he’s gonna go forwards to take a step and move further up to Artemis who seems busy hacking and somewhat defend.  Sliding slowly across and front, and now he sees Silas as he’s looking around, checking everything.  He takes up a defensive posture.  He’s wholly focused on the wolf in front of him, he has a hard time reading a terrible, awful presence in front of him.  He catch the glimpse of the strange thing on the ground, that appears to be kind of pulsing, but he can’t make out much else about it, he has no idea what the hell it is.

The wolf’s eyes lock on Illi, but as these new presences start coming out from the hole, she sees him kinda cock his head one side to the other and start sneering, but locks back on her and she sees what’s left of the mane that’s mantling around his head and his haunches starts flaring up and his ears kinda go back and down and low and he’s kinda snarling a little bit.  She might not know these wolves, but she knows wolves and wolf body language.  And she knows the image she just put out there.  What he’s basically sending off right now is he recognizes Illi as a wolf.  And she’s on his territory.  He does not like that at all.  So his focus is on her and he starts pacing forward.  As he gets close, he’s going to stop.  Silas, Illi and Brinden even Artemis can see the gland on his neck start pulsing and throbbing and it almost becomes big like a bullfrog.  They can see that large thing grow and they see this large green goo extending in about a 15 foot cone towards the northeast.  It hits Brinden, Illi and Artemis.

Illi is able to sidestep the goo.  Brinden and Artemis do their best, but it almost looks like he might have been focusing the blast on them.  It hits them and washes over them.  As they brace themselves and look up from it, it’s a very, very viscous and sticky glue-like substance that almost traps them against the ground.  It’s almost like being hit by a net and they both become restrained.  The beast then regards Silas and throws his weight against him, trying to bash him with his shoulder.  He does not do a good job, and Silas is able to push him off with his shield as the weight collapses upon him.  As the body peels off his shield, Silas sees this mozzarella cheese on a pizza stringy stuff that kinda connects it to his shield and suck off and slough off.

Silas:  ...gotta wash that.

The wolf’s eyes are still locked on Illi and he’s growling.  Illi walks over to the part Artemis hasn’t cleared yet and slashes at it.  With an expert surgical slash, she rakes her blade across the surface and disconnects the rest of the creeper vines from it.  The entirety of the writing is exposed and legible.  Illi keeps moving to the east.

Silas:  Don’t get too far away.

William climbs up on the ladder and pops out next to Artemis.  He sees everyone.  He sees this giant horrific wolf creature.  He sees a strange green growth undulating on the ground. He sees Brinden and Artemis coated in strange green sticky fluid they’re struggling against trying to peel themselves out of.  This is his first time up here, and he also notices the large imposing statue of Rannok, the trees and stuff embracing it, and some strange writing upon its base.  He recognizes the writing and is able to read it:

“May that ebony blade pierce thee

beneath which thou kneel!

May it sing only

round thy own head.”

The statue is scary, the wolf is scary, that green thing’s scary, the stuff covering Artemis and Brinden is scary, Illi over there is scary… William just freezes up in fear.

Artemis is struggling against the goo.  Brinden feels lashes against his backside and realizes it’s Artemis’s tail as she’s struggling and wiggling and just lashing against the filth covering her right now.  ((Brinden grabs her tail and starts wiping himself.))

Silas moves in front of William and casts bless on Brinden, Artemis and Illi.  Silas appears to clutch onto a familiar symbol beneath his vestments and focus a little.  He shoots his left hand out and as it does make its full arc across, it’s almost as if this phantom wave of water emanates out and arcs across the air and lands and splashes ephemerally against the three of them.  They all feel emboldened by it.

Brinden is getting infuriated by the struggling.  He falls into a pre-rage as he tries to clear the mess off himself.  He’s able to successfully wrest himself free of the goo with the aid of the blessing that he felt Silas place upon him.  He stays planted to get over this bubbling infuriation.  He digs in his heels and gets into a defensive posture as he cleans himself off.  He checks Artemis to make sure she’s still behind and braces himself.

The wolf’s eyes had been tracing Illi but its ears go flat as it sees Brinden tear free.  It looks at him and growls angrily.  It doesn’t like what he just did.  It tries to clamp its jaws onto him.  Silas throws a shield in its way.  Its jaws open ravenously and it goes to clamp on to him.  At the last second, he braces himself and puts an ax in the way of its maw, he sees this shield arc across and BONG!! It hits it on the side of the head and crest it.  It is not happy.  It doesn’t like any of them.  It starts moving south and then east.  As it goes, Brinden tries to attack.  His blow sinks into one of the pustules and pops and oozes this unfortunate sickly goo, but does not compel any wounds on it.  Silas attacks as well with his javelin, burying it in the wolf’s back left leg and causes it to stutter a bit and drag and yelp as it ducks in.  It runs throughout the foliage and bursts out the other side looking angrily at Illi.

Illi:  (turns to William) What did it say?  We need to get out of here, do we know?

William recites the inscription out loud.

William:  ...that doesn’t sound like an oath to me!

Illi:  Do we need to be stabbed by it?

Silas:  Sure hope not.

William:  Maybe there’s more…?

Illi walks back towards the statue and paces around, taking a leap up into the air, rakes her hand across the sword and cutting herself on it.  There’s some blood trickling down her fingers and no one really knows what the hell that was about.  She then touches the statue with the blood.  Nothing seems to happen when she does that.

While Illi was doing that, William is just staring at her with a “WTF” expression.  Illi just shrugs at him.  William proceeds to ignore the weird behavior and attempt to figure out how to get Artemis out of the goop.  As he does, he hears a voice inside his head say, “Ah, she’s got a good idea, boy, you should try to jump too, use your throat first! Jump up really high! Do it! Dooooo it!”

William:  (muttering to himself)  Artemis first… Artemis first… Artemis first…

He gets the feeling the voice was just mocking, but he’s too panic to really think about anything other than trying to free Artemis.  William takes out a knife and attempts to cut the goop off of Artemis.  He hits her with the knife, but wasn’t trying to wound her.  Artemis sees the boy reach up desperately and slide this dagger down from about her shoulders to her waist, and as the dagger cuts in, this membrane opens up and sloughs off her.  She feels like she has been released from this goo.

Artemis:  Thank you.  That was awful…

William grabs at Artemis’s tail and she feels a familiar pull compelling her towards the ladder.

Artemis:  We have the script translated, but we can’t leave yet, so…

William:  Why not??

Artemis:  We don’t have anywhere to go yet.  Don’t go near the orb.

Everyone knows exactly what she’s talking about the moment she says “orb.”  They don’t quite understand why, but feels she’s being earnest.

Illi:  It exploded in her face!

Artemis:  ...yes it did.

Silas:  Okay, why can’t we leave?

Artemis:  Cause I don’t know that we have anywhere else to go, once we go back to that cave.  And then… and then what?

William:  I don’t wanna slice my throat on the sword.

Artemis:  Why do you have to slice your throat on the sword??

They all have no idea why William would suggest such a thing, it sounds like a terrible idea.  Artemis decides to cast moonbeam in the general vicinity of the wolf.  She places the spell between the party and the wolf.  Now that she’s free, she throws her arms up.  Her eyes become engulfed in this blue-ish white light that almost start bursting out this radiance.  Illi finds it strangely refreshing, and the silver strand in her hair starts glowing in response to this as Artemis throws her arms up in the air, these small particles fly and wisp like hundreds of tiny fireflies in a whirlwind straight up in the air.  As they catch the moon’s rays, they see it arc back down and crash with impending force into the ground and erupt into this pillar of radiant blueish-white pure moonlight.  As it starts burning and arcing across the ground there, cutting into the grass, wilting it away, the beast tries its might to get away from it and they see it buckle against its force.

Artemis is focusing really hard on her spell, and it’s an impressive display.  William is staring at the display in complete and utter awe.

Silas thinks about following the wolf around.  He slides behind Brinden because obviously people are still looking around them, nobody’s going back down.  This time, thankfully, it’s not as precarious to make his way around the barbarian’s form.  He makes his way to the other side and comes close to the radiant, swirling column.  It’s almost too much to look into.  It’s not blinding, but it’s very bright and powerful.  He recognizes it as radiant energy.  Silas readies an action, if the wolf comes at them, he’ll attack it.  He gets out his ax.

Brinden is full raging.  He’s frustrated with the goo and he’s frustrated with his pathetic little swipe.  And this thing’s ran off and he’s just brimming.  Silas shifted past, this thing was crashing down and so Brinden’s just taking all this as one big whole fucking YES charge.  He’s going to sprint off with the sword out.  But he doesn’t know what this thing is and it’s got this big swirling radius, so he just avoids it cause it’s kinda weird.  Brinden and magic aren’t the best of friends.  Brinden is gonna be charging in towards, circling this big howling vortex of energy, and circling in the direction the wolf went in, so it’s like he can kinda see it but can’t, and he’s just edging his way around.  He wades into the undergrowth and swiping at it with the sword out of the way.

Brinden:  ARGH!! COME HERE, YA FILTHY BEAST!!

He’s taunting it and slapping at the grass and trying to keep away from the big energy thing.  He can feel this weirdness from it and he feels kinda hesitant.  But he’ll just keep swinging the sword.  Everyone can see Brinden like this.  They can tell the difference between when he’s in control and when he froths into a rage.  Anyone that can take a look at Brinden right now can tell he’s in a full blown battle rage, and he seems fully intent on bringing some pain to that wolf.

William:  ...scary…

Brinden sees Silas not charging with him, he realizes it’s not a whole big victory charge, so he’s like looking back over his shoulder in confusion.

The wolf starts its turn within Artemis’s moonbeam.  The energy that she conjured is burning into its flesh and searing into it so badly that he’s compelled to moan at the moon and back away.  His eyes haven’t removed from Illi and he’s not happy about this and wants to get at her, but realizes that this thing is not good.  After being burned and seared by it, he’s going to try making his way around to the target that did present itself, Brinden.  He tries to bare his fangs into Brinden.  His jaws sink into Brinden’s shoulder.  As he’s snapping at Brinden, Brinden can feel the weight pressing against him.  Everyone can see the jaws clamping as it’s wrestled off and starts snapping towards Illi.

Illi moves back towards the hole, feeling a bit of comfort in Artemis’s spell.  Her silver strand of hair is glowing.  As she passes Artemis, he reaches up and pokes Artemis’s face.  She takes out her bow and shoots an arrow.  Brinden’s trying to wrench the wolf’s jaws apart and wrestle against them.  They’re writhing and Illi doesn’t want to accidentally hit Brinden.  She wants to help, but the arrow just kinda arcs across.

William sees Illi poke Artemis’s face and her regard Artemis strangely, but nothing beyond that.  William is still panicking a little bit.  The plan was to read the thing and then get back in the hole, why are they still up here and not in the hole??  Since everyone seems intent on attacking the thing, he also gets out his bow and tries to shoot it.  The arrow sinks in just underneath its throat as its jaws are being pressed back by Brinden.  It sinks in right above where this strange bulbous gland is meeting its lower jaw.  It sprays out a little bit.

Illi:  William, run. We’re trying to protect you.  Go!  Shoo!

William quickly starts climbing down the ladder, but stays near the top, poking his head out.  Artemis kinda bends her arms and pushes as if she’s pushing against a large box.   The flame in her eyes ignites even more as this radiant moonlight glow washes out all over Silas.  He’s actually illuminated by the radiant force behind him.  She pushes and this giant column of majestic energy pour forward, chasing the wolf with the beam, moving it to just south of the wolf so it’s not near Brinden.  Illi smiles and looks over her bow.

Illi:  Pretty!

It’s as majestic and beautiful as it is pummelling.  Artemis can’t do much else, but just winks down at Illi.  The energy makes this radiant burst of sparks as she winks and Illi is super impressed.

Illi:  We should get downstairs...

Silas throws a javelin.  It arcs straight across.  Brinden feels its force and breeze whooshing by and sinks in halfway into the wolf’s neck.

Brinden is facing the thing head on.  He’s going to drop down on one knee and dive under it, pushing his sword up into it.  He forgot he was blessed.

((Silas:  GODDAMNIT, MAN.  YOU’RE BLESSED.  GOD LOVES YOU.))

Brinden puts his whole force, his shoulders into it, and lifts it off the ground a couple of feet as he buries his blade into its stomach.  It rakes up a little bit, cutting into it as it goes into its throat.  He definitely gets close to what he feels is an artery or vein running up there.  It pulls itself off the blade angrily and drops to the ground, its head thunking the ground as it does.  It does not like that.

The wolf starts its move inside the moonbeam.  As its flesh starts melting off as the light burns into it, they can see this burst of green blood spray across the ground as the wolf moans under the weight of the power.  It is bloodied and not happy.  It really wants to move, but it really hates Brinden.  Move.  Hate.  Grr.  It’s dumb and attacks Brinden.  Its jaws sink into his flesh it’s tasted of his coppery blood before.  Brinden is bloodied, but he enjoys the scars.  This time the jaws pulls Brinden down to the ground prone as it remains locked on to him.

Illi expertly meanders through everyone and stops next to Silas and growls, trying to get it off of Brinden and attract its attention.  She preps her bow and takes a stance, but it falters and squeaks a little.  The beast stops slathering over the barbarian for a sec and looks over, cocking its head, growling lowly.  He then goes back to Brinden.  Another arrow sinks into its upper right shoulder, embedding itself and tearing the flesh as his leg buckles a little, but it’s still intent on Brinden’s flesh.

William is at the top of the stairs.  He’s wondering why they are all going further away.  But if everyone’s attacking, then he will attack too.  He’s fumbling with the bow and the trap door and the bow… and it’s not really working… so he puts the bow away and props the trap door open with one hand, letting out an eldritch blast with the other.  Everyone see this fireball of light blue force trailing with fierce energy and force that streaks by and impacts the side, buckling the jaws of the creature, releasing Brinden and dropping him to the ground.  It’s compelled backwards, staggering at the impact of the blow.  As they all look backwards, they see William just like slowly ducking down lower into the hole.

Artemis stays where she is and concentrates.

Artemis:  Everybody get in line to go back down the hole.

Silas instead runs up to the wolf and gets out his ax.  He buries it into the wolf’s left shoulder down to its paw and opens up a humongous gash which flows free with blood and mucus and ooze that’s just leaking out.  It once again buckles under the force and doesn’t like Silas.  It growls and howls in response.

Brinden gets up, still frothing at the mouth.  It’s a fight to the death, as far as Brinden is concerned.  Glorious death or victory.  He takes a swing with his sword, but as the wolf buckles under Silas’s attack, his sword cuts clean across its head, shaving some fur off the top of its head as the blade cleaves across.  But he doesn’t find purchase in any of the creature’s flesh and it enrages Brinden even more.

The wolf is angry.  And it fucking hates them.  It turns out that enough time has passed and the huge gland in front of it expands again and it vomits.  Silas had seen it do this before, as it inflates the gland, he times his movement just right and ducks and sidesteps out, allowing the overwash to reflect off his shield as he guides it away from himself.  As his eyes go forward, he sees Brinden just coated in goo again.  He is once again restrained.  The wolf really wants Illi, but has a humongous tree trunk next to it.  Instead, he’s going to move around the boys, eyes still locked on Illi.  Silas sees the beast trying to move around him, jaws snapping and sneering at Illi.

As its snapping, Illi shoots an arrow and hits its ear, which splits open and sprays blood and green ichor as the arrow then sinks into its haunch and compels its leg back a little bit.  Silas sees it’s a little punch-drunk, it’s staggering a little bit from the force.  It backs into the moonbeam, Artemis doubles down and focuses, causing this whirlwind to escalate to a furious frenzy, and the light starts peeling flesh and sinew off of it.  They watch as the fur and skin peel back, each little fleck of moonlight just evaporating the creature in front of their eyes.  Flesh become muscle, muscle gets wrapped and torn apart into bone, until soon 75% of the creature is sloughed aside.  The other half of it just drops to the ground.  It is DEAD.

Illi:  (to Artemis)  Nice!

Illi runs up and gives Artemis a big hug.  William pokes his head out of the hole.

William:  ...can we go back now?

Silas:  How about we search the rest of the statue?

William:  Do we have to?

Silas:  The thing is dead.

William just groans.

Illi:  Brinden needs help.

They realize there’s still a goo-covered barbarian.  Illi starts cutting the goo off of him, feeling it slowly sloughing off and releasing.  As she gets down past his chest, she juts her hand into his tunic really quickly and snatches back her disk.  The mucus membrane sloughs off.  Brinden thanks Illi profusely as his rage wears off and he realizes the beast is no more.

Artemis dissipates the energy.  Silas approaches what’s left of the creature as the light evaporates into small little fireflies.  He investigates the creature.  He has a perfect vivisection of the beast.  As he goes over it, he realizes the creature was alive, it wasn’t undead.  But it had these strange growths, and where these pustules were, there appears to be roots that extend down and wrapped down the bone and musculature of it, almost as if these nodules were somehow embedded and growing and living off the creature.  He also noticed that’s how it gained as much of its girth as he sees.  There are humongous poison sacs inside of it that probably helped bloat it and helped it gain the weight it had.  Silas looks at Artemis and Illi.

Silas:  Do you think these things are poison or acid?

This new vivisection does not add to Artemis’s knowledge but she did well investigating the polyps before.  She surmises it’s maybe a plant-based growth almost like a parasitic fungus which had grown inside of this and was not natural to the wolf, it was introduced to it.  The host’s body had contracted this somehow, but she had not seen enough of this environment to know if it’s native to this region, but it was definitely not native to this creature and it put it in an immense amount of pain and duress.  The sacs apparently contain acid.

Artemis:  From what I can tell earlier, there was this orb and it seems to be acid based and it looks like that.

Silas:  Do you think it would eat away at the door?

Artemis:  It might.  I don’t know how we would contain it though.

William:  I don’t want to touch it…

Illi:  I have a glass vial, I can hold a little bit at a time.

Artemis:  Does anyone have anything that could withstand acid?

While everyone is talking, Illi gathers up sticks and twigs and starts covering it as if preserving the body.  The glands inside of the wolf doesn’t seem to have reacted to anyone.  Artemis definitely takes note of that.  There does appear to be one or two intact sacs in the corpse.

Silas:  (to Illi)  Can you… try to cut those out?  And see if we can easily transport it?

Illi:  I can try.  Artemis, maybe you can help me, you seem to know stuff about this.

Artemis makes her way over there.  She points out how the webwork of roots and stuff are going down and wrapping around the soft spots as Illi carefully carves out and around with her shortsword.  Between the two of them, they manage to free one of the sacs.  It’s like a giant pillow-sized water balloon filled with some kind of strange gooey fluid.  Illi takes out her cape and puts it in her cape to carry it.  She hands it to Silas, who did not accept it.  Illi continues to cover up the wolf.  Silas rakes across the wolf’s mouth, shearing across half the mouth and breaking all the teeth.  He tries again, this time tracing up the gums and is able to pop out 6 perfect teeth.  Illi walks over and covers up the rest of it.

Brinden is cleaning himself up, peeling off the goo.  He makes his way over to William and small talk.

Brinden:  Hey, nice thing you did back there, William.  Whatever it was you threw at the beast… kind of impressed by that, pretty cool.  Bring it when we need it most.

William:  (soaking up the praise)  Thanks!

Brinden pats William on the shoulder as he quickly climbs out of the hole towards the adulation.

William:  Yay, praise!

Brinden starts flicking off the pieces of goo still on him.

William:  ...ew, praise…

Everyone goes back to inspecting the statue, except Illi who takes out a small white stone, placing it on the forehead of the creature and then kicks her head back and howls.  They see the silver strand in her hair spark and glow with energy.  William makes his way around the statue.  The writing is on the forefront of it, but as he makes his way to the back, he sees there’s a little bit more of the writing back there.  As he regards said writing, he is able to make out:

“We bow to the oathblade.

Its legacy adorns us.

Its gifts to Rannok shall lead us.”

((This oath activates S Voice on William’s phone.  Rannok calling “HEY BABE WHAT’S UP? WANNA HAVE A BABY?”))

It seems to be referring to what Rannok is wielding in his hand.  Illi goes up to Brinden.

Illi:  You okay?

Brinden:  Mm.  Yeah.

Brinden is calming down from his rage.  Illi can see Brinden sustained some kind of gushing wounds from the teeth marks that aren’t healed over and bleeding.  Illi lets Artemis and Silas know.  Brinden gets some moss out and starts rubbing it.  Artemis grabs some fur from the wolf and brings it over and pats into the open wounds.  Brinden resists on this, knowing this is not the best fur.

Brinden:  We need different fur!  We need a better quality fur for this sort of thing…

Artemis:  Psych!

She puts the fur in her pocket and does cure wounds.  Brinden is bewildered.  Silas is laughing.  William goes to investigate this odd sound.

Brinden:  I’m feeling better already!  Artemis, you are a star!

They investigate all around the statue.  They feel pretty sure they discovered every bit of text around the thing.  When Illi hears the word “fur” she scowls at Brinden a little.  The statue’s pedestal goes up 5-8 feet.  Rannok’s form is about 15-20 feet high.  His sword is about 12-15 feet off the ground.  Silas tries to climb up onto it.  It reminds him of going up the rigging of a mastline.  As he’s making his way up and around, he feels familiar muscles are bending and pulling himself upwards.  He makes his way to the top.  He’s testing to see if there’s anything that moves or pushes, anything that looks odd.  As he work his way around the head of Rannok and see his large crown, he notices where the eye sockets are, the stone isn’t flush.  There’s two channels.  He works his way down and presses into it.  The eyes press inwards a little bit.  This baleful red force, red energy starts glowing a little bit and pours out and connects like laser beams into Silas’s eyes.  He doesn’t see his surroundings anymore, but instead he’s thrust down and he’s staring into the face of this presence sitting on a large ebony throne.  The whole entirely of his view is awash in red light, but he feels himself with this smoke filtering around him, peering into the eyes of this large bearded man.  He’s kind of looking off to the side, and he slowly turns his head and locks eyes with Silas, his eyes flaring red and he bends down and says:

Rannok:  What is this?  A new friend has come. (laughs). Pilgrims to the great Rannok.  What brings you here?

Silas:  We came to offer tribute.

Rannok:  Tribute, you say?  More tribute for the king.  (laughs).  It is a joyous anniversary, this day indeed! (laughs).  Oh, it is good you did, I received the town’s tribute, which has been quite supple so far.  Though there was one in particular I found offensive and dealt with.  The others have been… quaint.  You bring more for me? Tell me, what bounties of flesh have you for King Rannok?

Silas:  We’re visitors, we didn’t bring female tribute.  We brought gifts.

Rannok:  I don’t recognize you. You’re strange to me. Not from around these parts. You honestly probably don’t know the tradition, so tell me. What gifts do you bring fit for me, Rannok?

Silas:  I bring you a magical key that opened a sacred door.

He was wearing Bainx’s key around his neck and holds it aloft.  Rannok growls!

Rannok:  That is the work of the Geisterfell!  That is the artifice of those that trapped me here! I will make you BURN!

Silas:  Well, shit.

As Silas is compelled back from this vision, and everyone can hears all of this it’s echoing in their heads and strangely enough they can all understand it, they hear the voice say, “I find your tribute wanting, child!”  Silas takes necrotic damage and is compelled off the statue, falling backwards and takes more damage from the fall.

William:  Silas!

Brinden tries to put himself in his way and does manage to get under him a little, but not enough to siphon the damage, though he does catch Silas as he falls off the statue.  At this point, the vision has ceased and broken.  Silas is barely conscious.  The other didn’t see any of the visions, but they all heard the echoing voice emanating from Silas’s direction.  Those who were looking up as the voice was echoing, Silas’s mouth was moving as if the words were coming from his mouth.

Illi:  What happened?

Silas:  Uh… Well, that statue was a pretty accurate representation…

Illi:  How did you know that?

William:  He seems mean…

Silas:  (to William) Yeah, I don’t think he’s happy with us.  (to Illi)  I saw him.

Illi:  You saw him?  Like Artemis and Brinden?  Did you have a dream while you were up there?

Silas:  I don’t know, I don’t think it was a dream.  I think it was real.

As Silas is talking, William’s latent instincts pop the moment he sees this flame, this light, this redness, this voice.  He’s able to recognize there is a strong enchantment on the statue.  The best he can surmise, it’s some kind of viewing device.  This enchantment allows someone to see through the eyes of the statue.  As he trace the edge of the pointing blade, he realizes it’s on a large hilltop cresting above the trees, looking down upon the nearby village.

Silas sits up slowly.  Everyone is having a short rest now.
